Description
This combination of low acidity, a smooth body, and classic nutty/chocolatey notes makes Brazil Cerrado Patrocínio a popular choice for both single-origin coffee and as a base for espresso blends, where it contributes body and a pleasing crema without an overpowering bitterness.
History:
While coffee has a long history in Brazil, the Cerrado region’s rise as a major coffee-producing area is relatively recent. Coffee cultivation in this region began in the early 1960s. The Cerrado was a high, semi-arid plateau, and the initial challenge was the lean soil, which required fertilization to be suitable for coffee. However, the region’s climate and terrain proved to be advantageous for large-scale, mechanized farming. The success of the Cerrado region led to it being the first coffee-producing region in Brazil to receive a “Denomination of Origin” (DO) certification, known as “Cerrado Mineiro.” This certification, established in 2013, guarantees that coffee from the region meets specific quality standards, including being an Arabica varietal grown at an altitude of over 800 meters and scoring at least 80 points on the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) scale. This helped to solidify the region’s reputation for producing high-quality coffee and provided a way to differentiate it from the mass-produced coffee Brazil is often known for. Today, the Patrocínio area is a key part of this success, with many farms implementing sustainable and innovative farming practices.
