A Rich History:
The story of coffee in Brazil, and specifically the “Santos” designation, is deeply intertwined with the nation’s rise as the world’s leading coffee producer. Coffee was first introduced to Brazil in 1727, famously smuggled from French Guiana by Lt. Col. Francisco del Melo Palheta. Initially consumed locally, its popularity surged in Europe and the United States, leading to massive expansion of plantations in the 19th century, particularly in states like Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Minas Gerais. By the 1840s, Brazil was producing an astounding 40% of the world’s coffee, a dominance it largely maintains today. The port city of Santos in São Paulo became the pivotal export gateway for Brazilian coffee, and over time, the name “Santos” became synonymous with quality and consistency for beans shipped through it, effectively becoming a market grade rather than a specific bean variety.
