Description
Natural processed Aricha often presents a vibrant explosion of ripe berry notes (blueberry, strawberry), stone fruits (peach, apricot), and tropical fruits (mango, passionfruit). These are typically accompanied by a rich, syrupy sweetness of honey or brown sugar, sometimes with a delightful wine-like or “grape bubblegum” funk and a lingering, clean finish.
Ancient Roots & Yirgacheffe’s Gem: History & Region
Ethiopia is universally recognized as the origin of Arabica coffee, where it has grown wild for centuries, deeply interwoven with the nation’s culture and history. The “Aricha” designation specifically points to coffee from the Aricha washing station, sometimes referred to as Aricha Mulecha Mugida located in the Yirgacheffe district, within the Gedeo Zone of southern Ethiopia. Yirgacheffe is a legendary name in the coffee world, revered for its incredibly complex and aromatic coffees. The region’s ideal conditions – high altitudes, fertile volcanic soil, consistent rainfall, and ample shade from forest canopies – provide a perfect environment for coffee to thrive. Farmers in this area are primarily smallholders, often with only a few acres of land, who meticulously hand-pick their cherries and deliver them to centralized washing stations like Aricha. While the Aricha station itself had periods of neglect, a recent revival, notably by Testi Coffee, has brought it back to prominence, focusing on quality and providing vital income for the surrounding communities.
